"The World's Voice" Drawing Sheet

"The World's Voice" was a project based on people's attitudes towards social issues that happen all around the world. This drawing sheet was a starting point of my project. I used this sheet to explore my initial ideas and medias that would work well in a final graphics piece. Medias that were used in this piece consist of fine liner pen. ink, mono printing and watercolours. This piece was created on a A1 size sheet.

"The World's Voice" Image Manipulations

After researching more in depth into "The World's Voice" project I realised that I had to use a figurative in my illustrations and final graphic work to put across a more striking image and message. For my primary resource, I took photos of people which linked to social issues such as: poverty, greed and addiction. My photographs were then manipulated through Photoshop and layered onto hand made backgrounds which were scanned through.

"The World's Voice" Hand Manipulations

Through the development of my project "The World's Voice" I began to hand manipulate my primary and secondary images that I would use in my final outcomes. My final outcomes consist of a series of graphic enhanced illustrations that would be used in a book to communicate the social issues. I used many techniques in these hand manipulations such as: mono printing, collage, dark room experiments, drawing, stick and ink, acrylic transfer and printing on acetate. This piece is on a A1 size sheet.

"The World's Voice" Composition Testing

Through the process of my project, I thought it was important to test compositions so I knew what pictures worked well with each other. This process of testing different medias together gave me ideas in how to combine my illustrations with photographic resources. Most of these tests consist of my hand manipulations layered with images.

"The World's Voice" Final Pieces

These are a few of my final graphics that will be published in the book "The World's Voice". these graphics started as a hand drawn illustration that was drawn in a stencil-like style because it stands out and is more contrasting amongst the other images. My hand illustrations were drawn with fine liners and paint. I created explosive backgrounds which link to the social issue which it's communicating, whether that's through the use of colour or texture. These hand illustrations where then scanned through to a computer where they were manipulated further with my images sources into a final graphics piece.

"Body Language" Figure Drawings

The idea of these three figure drawings was not to capture the detail of the body but the energy and structure. The three techniques that were used where; charcoal and chalk, dribble and stick and ink. All these drawings are very expressive and loose in control as there was a 10-15 minute time limit on each figure. Each drawing was at a large scale- slightly smaller than a A1.

"Body Language" Figure Paintings

A1 Finger Painting

A1 Impasto
The idea of these two paintings was to capture the energy and expression through the figure using colour and texture. These two painting techniques are very loose and capture every stroke of paint which creates movement within the painting. These studies where created in 1-2 hours, they helped me to understand the body form from a different perspective and how texture and colour influenced the mood and emotion.

"Body language" Photography

My photography work was linked to my project "Body Language" in these two pieces I used the layering effect so that the figure was exaggerated. Photography artist Nir Arieli was my influence to my work, I like how the combinations of different positions of the body can create movement and energy.

"Body language" - Artist Research and Testing

During the development of my project I researched illustrators that I thought show expression and movement in figure drawings. My main inspiration was illustrator Gabriel  Moreno who has also influenced past work of mine, I love the repetition of linier patterns which appear in his work and how the capture movement, tone and also depth. After some research I did small thumbnail sketches where I practiced continual line and ink techniques as I believe that this captures the energy of figures.

"Body Language" Final Illustrations

These series of illustrations are a combination of hand drawings and photography. The drawings are made with different medias such as: fine liner and biro pen which was then made into a wash effect by adding water with a paint brush. Inks where also added to create the darker tones of the figure. The figure is made up of linier patterns, from straight in- lined patterns to scribbly random lines to create texture and tone. Strips of photographs were added to create depth in this piece as well as to contrast with the curve of the figure. All illustrations are the size of A2.

"Pattern Project" Drawing Sheet

This A1 drawing sheet was influenced by lots of different patterns that are found in nature. The idea was to take the patterns that we see and simplify them so that there is high contrast of white and black. these make the patterns appear more bold and less detailed. This sheet made me research many different patterns that I could later used throughout my project. These patterns have be inspired by animals, insects, plants, close up organisms and birds.

"Pattern Project" A1 Mood Board

Through the development of my project I created this mood board which shows elements of my planning, I included images of artist inspirations, secondary source images and different techniques such as biro and mono print and collage. The idea of my plan was to portray my message of vulnerable women being targeted and preyed upon by men and how this can effect them. Here, the wolf is a symbol of a predator and the images of flowers are symbols of freedom. In this mood board I wanted to create different patterns by different techniques so effectively this mood board was also a testing sheet.

"Pattern Project" Testing Compositions

These are series of tests that I did before creating my final illustration. Through testing I was seeing how to arrange my composition and then what techniques to use, I was unsure at this time how to place the wolf into the illustration; I didn't want it over power the female but to communicate the message of how it is a predator. I used a linier style of  work from illustrator Gabriel Moreno, I found that his technique combines images well together. I then tested bright and colourful mono print flowers and butterflies as these have positive connotations.

"Pattern Project" final piece.

mixed media on board.

This piece of work was produced as a final for a past project called "Pattern". This illustration is on a 1m x 80cm wooden board and was created by using a range of medias such as: Biro pen, ink and mono print. The idea of this piece is about women feeling repressed, captured and dominated and have no right to freedom. I used the vision of the wolf to symbolise a dominating and predatory element and the use of butterflies, birds and flowers as freedom and happiness connotations and symbols.

"Pride and Prejudice" - Drawing Sheet

At the start of my project "Pride and Prejudice" I created an installation of all things that symbolise prejudice. This included items such as burned bras, (which represent sexism and feminism prejudice) a burned Barbie doll (which symbolises the negative effects on the idea of perfection, spray cans,(the idea of vandalism and destruction in communities) and rosemary beads and chains. I then used this installation as a focus for my observational drawing which is at a scale of A1.

"Pride and Prejudice" Hand Manipulation Photography

During the process of this project I did a photo shoot based on the theme of "Prejudice" where I focus on main issues of prejudice such as anxiety and depression. The images shown in the above are capturing the idea of suffocation and entrapment through mental illness. To communicate this further, I produced a series of hand manipulations that distress the images further, I used techniques such an acrylic transfer, image make on distressed fabric and collage. All these techniques I found add texture to the images so they do more justice for the image and the message which it is trying to commute.

"Drink Driving" Hand Manipulations

These images are tests for a social awareness project. I chose to design a poster to raise awareness on the consequences of drink driving, I wanted to convince my audience by using shocking and bold graphics. These images are from my first stages of development where I used a combination of photography and hand manipulation. In these images I scratched into them, drawn on them to pick out more detail. I also layered images by photo shop and by hand; I crumpled up images and then layered them on top to create texture and the idea of destruction.

"Drink Driving" Text on Graphics

In these series of graphics I began to test text over the image to see what would communicate better with my audience. I thought  playing on words would make my argument more strong in the message which I want to communicate. Through this process I thought using a command rather than I statement would make my audience think more about  what the poster is trying to communicate, the play on the words "drive" and "die" shows how if driving irresponsibly can cause fatal consequences for the driver themselves or others on the road and this links well with the fragments of skeleton in the poster.
